"To ask the Manager for an update on the Gathering 2013 for the area under the remit of this Committee, and to make a statement on the matter?"

REPLY:

South Dublin County Tourism in partnership with South Dublin County Council, Fingal Leader Partnership and The Gathering Ireland will host a large number of international events and tournaments in 2013, through sport, business and culture, as part of the biggest tourism initiative to take place in Ireland under The Gathering Ireland 2013. The Square Town Centre, Cuisine De France and local businesses have also joined the project as sponsors.

To date the Gathering Dublin has delivered 12 events with 7000 international visitors generating 11,000 bed nights.

Marketing Update
Social media update:
Instagram interactions are up by 20% since end April 2013.
Facebook likes are made up from Ireland, USA, UK and Australia.
YouTube views increased by 20% to 3124 from UK, Ireland and USA.

Promotional Material:
Gathering Dublin Newspaper and DL Flyer are in circulation.
Banners and other promotional material have been present at all events.
The website www.thegatheringdublin.com is getting increased traffic month on month.
Promotion is still active on irishcentral.com, europeanirish.com, worldirish.com and Irish Post (UK).
Local and national media have embraced the Gathering Dublin (Radio, Print and Online)

Tallaght events:
EFAF American Football Atlantic Cup 2013: The EFAF Atlantic Cup is a 'gathering' of European American football players and supporters who share a love for the sport and play at amateur level. The IAFA influenced the bringing of the EFAF Atlantic Cup to Dublin via it's membership of the European Federation of American Football. This is the Western European Amateur Club competition involving the best amateur clubs from Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands. The games will take place in Tallaght Stadium: 29th June: Semi-Finals and 30th June: Finals. The IAFA encouraged this event to locate in Dublin in 2013 to be part of the year of the Gathering.

American Football Gathering Bowl: The IAFA used its network of contacts within the sport to approach North American teams about The Gathering Bowl. The IAFA and Mayor of South Dublin issued official invitations to interested teams last October. Interestingly, all the confirmed teams play in Green.
Two high profile games involving Canadian and North American teams to take place in Tallaght Stadium as follows:
High School Football - European/ USA v Canadian Team.
Semi -Pro Football - Florida Team v Irish Team.

Irish Olympic Handball Gathering: The IOHA Handball Gathering will see some of the best Irish Handball players (male and female teams) compete against teams from England, Scotland, Germany and Switzerland in an atmosphere of friendship and fun. The event which is being held in the Arena in Tallaght as part of the 2013 Gathering 'Meet and Compete' series being run in association with South Dublin Tourism. Olympic Handball or Handball as it is known around the world is played in over 100 countries. In Europe handball is the most popular ladies team sport while Men's handball is second only to Football. Shots on goal can reach over 100km per hour ensuring plenty of excitement for players and spectators alike.

Rua Red Gathering: RUA RED are excited to be holding a community-day that is the culmination of international performance artist Anthony Schrag's month long collaboration with the neighbourhood. This will be a participatory event, inviting visitors of all ages to explore, collaborate and create. There will be artists, writers, musicians and much more at this wonderful day for all the family.

Basketball Gathering Shield: Wales, Norway and Iceland will travel to take on Ireland for the first ever Basketball Ireland Gathering Shield. The games will be played over the October Bank Holiday weekend in the National Basketball Arena, the home of Irish basketball.
