QUESTION NO. 12
QUESTION: Councillor M. Duff
Would the Manager please make a report detailing what actions, other than the Green Schools promotion, are carried out by the Environment Department, in respect of making information regarding the Litter Laws available to second level schools in Tallaght and will he confirm if this information is made available to all staff and students of these schools.
REPLY:
The Green Schools programme is very successful with 124 of a total of 135 schools in the County involved - 72% of primary schools have green flags and 52% of secondary schools. Litter and waste is the first theme in the Green schools programme and schools can avail of talks, work shops and information in relation to Litter legislation. This information highlights the ongoing effects of litter in the community and on available Council resources. Schools carry out waste audits and litter picks and Green Flag schools manage to create an awaresness and a reduction in waste and litter as a reuslt of their involvment in the Green Schools programme.
There are many communications to schools addressing litter issues and include the following:-
In addition, schools are informed of projects in the wider community.
National Spring Clean is an annual event and takes place in April each year - schools are encouraged to participate. Eco-week organised by the Council each year has many events including those on the of litter and waste topic - many of the events target schools.
