MOTION NO. 4

MOTION: Councillor E. Coburn

"That this Committee discuss with the aid of a report the traffic management measures that are in place in the vicinity of Whitechurch National School and to outline the plans of SDCC to address the concerns raised by the Board of Management of the school."

REPORT:

The following road markings and signage are in place. These include:

  1. Slow down school ahead markings from both approaches
  2. School children crossing signs from both approaches
  3. Periodic speed limit of 30KPH during school hours
  4. Continuous white centre line to discourage overtaking in the vicinity of the school.

The Part 8 for the Whitechurch Road Traffic Calming Scheme was approved in November 2009. Roads Design & Construction has applied for funding annually since then, with partial funding being secured in 2012 for the section of Whitechurch Road north of Taylor's Lane.

A further application for funding for 2013 was made to the NRA under the Low Cost Safety Improvement Works Scheme in respect of Phase Two of the Whitechurch Road Traffic Calming Scheme south of Taylor's Lane which includes that part of the road in the vicinity of Whitechurch National School. Funding has not been allocated to date for 2013. Further applications for funding will be made for 2014.

In the meantime, the Garda authorities have undertaken to carry out more frequent patrols and speed checks at this location.
