MOTION NO.4
MOTION: Councillor J. Lahart
That the Council agrees to investigate the provision of a BMX park in South Dublin County and identified suitable locations, including the Knocklyon
REPORT:
In general, the model used in the development of Skateparks and Cycle Tracks in the county where well organised groups approach the Council with clear proposals and confirming an established need for such facilities have been found to work best. No approach has been made to the Council by any such group in relation to an BMX Park.
The provision of a BMX Park in the South Dublin County Council area has not therefore been included in the current 3 Year Capital Programme, no plans have been developed and no potential funding stream has been examined. It should be noted that the substantial capital funding as well as the financial input required for on-going maintenance that would be required for such a project would be prohibitive.
While the Council might be open to consideration of the need for and viability of such a project, it is considered that the potential cost and apparent lack of supporting evidence of a need for the facility would make it hard to justify inclusion in the Capital Programme.
