QUESTION NO.11

QUESTION: Councillor W. Lavelle

To ask the Manager to present a report on water quality in the River Griffeen, including any recent testing results; and to provide a detailed update on progress in implementing the 'programme of measures' proposed under the Eastern River Basin District plan?

REPLY:

The upper reaches of the River Griffeen from source to Newcastle Village are of good water quality. The middle reaches of the River Griffeen from Newcastle Village to the Grand Canal in Lucan are of moderate water quality. The water quality in the lower reaches of tjhe River Griffeen from the Grand Canal to its outfall into the River Liffey in Lucan Village are moderate to poor due to the affects of urbanisation predominately misconnections. There are no Water Framework Directive Monitoring sample points on the River Griffeen therefore South Dublin County Council (SDCC) has no tests results from the Central Laboratory for this river.

A programme of measures on the River Griffeen has started. These measures include (a) all pollution incidents reported to SDCC are investigated promptly and the appropriate action taken, (b) with all taking in charge housing estate requests the surface water outfall is sampled for misconnections and the appropriate action requested, (c) all known trade effluent discharges are licenced and monitored (d) the FOG (fats, oils and grease) programme has started which will reduce blockages and overflows into the surface water systems and (e) some farmyard surveys will be undertaken.
