To ask the Manager to outline what powers or authority the Council has to tackle the activity of criminal gangs involved in the smuggling of fuel, cigarettes and counterfeit goods, as set out in the Retail Ireland Report 'Tackling the Black Market and Retail Crime', which is costing the exchequer €861 million per annum?
REPLY:
South Dublin County Council has no authority in respect of illegal/smuggled fuel, cigarettes or counterfeit goods. Powers in this area lie with An Garda Síochana and with the Revenue Commissioners, Customs & Excise unit.
