MOTION: Councillor M. Duff

With the Gathering events about to commence in the County, this Committee call on the Manager to ensure that all intended venues that are to be used for such events are in excellent condition, paying particular attention to the main access road to the Basketball Arena, and ensuring that the public lighting is in full working condition and that the road surface is free of potholes.

REPORT:

The public lighting along the access road to the National Basketball Arena has been subject to repeated vandalism and damage over a period of many years. A number of meetings were held in 2011 and 2012 between the Council and the Executive of the National Basketball Arena (NBA) to discuss and agree a programme of works to upgrade the access to the arena. These discussions included the public lighting and the upgrade of the access road itself.

Some funding has been secured by the Council for this project.  Detailed designs are now being prepared for tendering by the Roads Design Section of the Council and subject to the value of the submitted tenders and the available funding, both external and internal, it is anticipated that the project could commence in 2013.
