MEETING OF SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

Monday, April 08, 2013

MOTION NO. 12

MOTION: Councillor M. Devine

That the Manager reports on known flooding spots within the County with particular reference to the Newtown and Raheen areas and agree a drainage strategy to tackle ongoing frequent flooding

REPORT:

The problems at Newtown/Glenview Park, Tallaght were to do with surface water getting into the foul system due to combined sewers in the Old Bancroft Area, but this problem has been resolved by the Drainage Direct Labour Crew putting in overflow pipes between two foul sewerage systems in Bancroft Park and at the bottom of Glenview Park beside the N81.

The flooding problem in Raheen opposite the Shopping Centre on the Cookstown Road has been resolved except in very heavy downpours when some ponding occurs at the junction into Raheen Estate which quickly dissipates.

Most of the areas in the County that are prone to minor flooding have been been resolved by either the Drainage or the Roads Departments in the last few years. Where major works are required to resolve drainage issues South Dublin County Council has applied to the OPW (Office of Public Works) for funding under their Minor Works Flood Alleviation Scheme and in most cases have been successful in obtaining funding. Monies are also obtained from the Department under the Drainage Grants under the Regional and Local Roads Grants Scheme to resolve flooding issues. Both the Drainage and the Roads Departments will continue to resolve outstanding drainage/ flooding issues using funds available from various sources.
