QUESTION NO. 2
QUESTION: Councillor T. Gilligan
To ask the Manager to undertake a full clean up of the walking route along the Canal within the Clondalkin area? How much was spent developing this walking route also?
REPLY:
An unscheduled inspection of the Grand Canal Way- Green Route from the 3rd Lock at Davitt Road to the 12th Lock on the Lucan – Newcastle Road was carried out on Thursday 7th March 2013. The inspection found that all the bins along the Route were empty and the surrounding areas were more or less clear of litter.
As previously indicated inspections are carried out at least twice a week and bins emptied as required.
Problems do arise occasionally when bags of household rubbish, nappies and ashes are dumped into the bins and this clogs up the openings on the bin even though the bin itself would not be full.
A review of the inspections of the bins will be undertaken shortly as the level of activity on the Canal will increase over the next few months.
The final all-in cost of the Grand Canal-Green Route Project was €17,050,683.03. These costs were apportioned between South Dublin County Council (43%), Dublin City Council (13%) and ESB (44%).
