MOTION NO. 11

MOTION: Councillor J. Lahart

That this Council, bearing in mind that the only forseeable source of additional revenue to this Council (and other Dublin Councils) is revenue accruable from Property Tax (through an equalisation fund), recommends to the Minister for Environment & Local Government, that increasing the number of councillors to this Local Authority to forty, is not warranted at this time.

REPORT:

At the January 2013 meeting of the Council, a report on the invitation from the Local Electoral Area Boundary Committee was presented to the Members.  Following discussion a submission based on the contents of the debate was prepared and agreed with the Members prior to its submission to the Boundary Committee.  The following point was included in this submission:

• There was also a widely held view that to increase the proposed membership of South Dublin to 40 seats at this time would be seen by the public as an error

This submission has been acknowledged by the Boundary Committee who have indicated that they will take the matter into consideration.  The report of the Boundary Committee will be submitted in due course to the Minister for consideration.

Should the motion be agreed by the Members a letter will issue to the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government detailing the contents of the motion.
