MOTION NO. 2

MOTION: Councillor E. Higgins

That the Council congratulates students from South Dublin County who participated in this years BT Young Scientist Exhibition. 

REPORT:

Entries into the 2013 BT Young Scientist Exhibiton were increased by 24% over the 2012 entries.  Below is a breakdown of the entries received:-

• 1,879 entries received spanning 32 counties
• 4,189 students
• 362 schools represented
• Number of entries per category:
  • Biological & Ecological Sciences: 504
  • Chemical, physical & Mathematical Sciences: 308
  • Social & Behavioural Sciences: 697
  • Technology: 370

Five different groups from South Dublin County were successful in winning awards at this year's BT Young Scientist Exhibition.  They were as follows:-

• Category - Biologocial and Ecological Sciences.  3rd in Senior Group - St. Joseph's College, Lucan. "Spent coffee grounds as a nutritious plant potting medium - promoting a circular economy through scientific research"

• Category - Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences. 1st in Junior Group - Our Lady's School, Templeogue. '"Realtime" Information?'

• Category - Technology. 1st in Intermediate Group - St. Joseph's College, Lucan. "To investigate, design and create a temperature lowering apparatus used to elongate endurance during exercise."

2nd in Senior Group -  Colaiste Phadraig, Lucan. "The log table app."

3rd in Senior Group - Colaiste Phadraig, Lucan. "Developing a fetal pacemaker that utilizes piezoelectric energy."
