MOTION NO. 2

MOTION: Councillor M. Corr

That the Manager reviews the condition of the public realm on the Brookfield Road and arranges without delay to carry out any upgrading necessary to bring it to a standard that would be acceptable in any other part of the county.

REPORT:

Roadside margins and open spaces in the Brookfield area are generally maintained to a  high standard.  The Council's Sen. Ex. Parks Superintendent for the Corkagh District has reported that additional hedge planting can be provided to replace losses along the boundary railing on the edge of the open space.  There is also an issue with damage to some margins caused by vehicle parking in front of the shops.  This can be addressed by either hard surfacing, bollards or provision of parking bays.

SDCC Traveller Accommodation Unit has no budgetary funding in place to carry out any works at the entrance to St. Aidens Residential Caravan Park in 20l3. However, an application for Capital Funding has been made to the Department of Environment Community and Local Government to redevelop the site and if the application is successful , Housing Department will ensure that the development works will cover ancillary bondary treatment at this location.I

The Council's nominated Contractor, Oxigen,  is responsible for carrying out sweeping and litter picking of Brookfield Road every month.  This is the thorough sweeping and litter picking of all the specified areas (ie the roadway, footpaths, cycle tracks, medians, traffic islands, paved areas, grass margins and planted areas) between the road boundaries to include the removal of all litter, debris, road grit and other waste regardless of it’s size.  It should be noted that this also includes the removal of all litter, debris and other waste from the boundary wall, fence or hedge itself

The Contract also includes for weed removal. This operation is the removal of all weeds within the road or street including around the bases of trees, sign poles and lighting columns.  It also includes the spraying twice yearly of all road edges, footpaths, hard surface areas such as medians and traffic islands.  Weed spraying shall occur on the first occasion between the months of April and June inclusive, and on the second occasion between the months of July and September inclusive

The Council's Roads Department has undertaken to inspect and repair any cracks that are deemed to represent a safety hazard.

The Council's Water/Drainage Inspector has reported, following inspection of surface water along the Brookfield Road, that there are no visible problems, he further reported that the road gullies are clear.  However, more specific information on the location of and the weather conditions pertaining when flooding occurs, is required to provide a more detailed response.
