QUESTION NO.10

QUESTION: Councillor D. Looney

"To ask the Manager how it is planned to monitor use of the adult fitness equipment recently installed in several of our parks and green spaces; to provide any details available regarding usage statistics or observations; to note how many items have been damaged or removed; and to make a statement on the matter?"

REPLY:

Outdoor Exercise Equipment was installed during the summer months in eleven parks around the county. The parks where the equipment was installed are

Beechfield Park, Walkinstown

Greenhills Park, Greenhills

Glendown Park, Templeogue

Tymon Park (2 trails) one each side of M50

Griffeen Valley Park, Lucan

Waterstown Park, Palmerston

Hermitage Park, Lucan

Ballymount Park, Clondalkin

Rathcoole Park, Rathcoole

Corkagh Park, Clondalkin

Kingswood Park, Tallaght

The equipment has proven to be very popular and the public have taken to using the equiment as soon as it was installed.  Each piece of equipment has guidance provided which sets out general advice and directions as to how to use the equipment properly.

As part of National Recreation Week in October, the Council's Sports Officer arranged a series of  training sessions on the equipment with instruction and guidance provided by a professional fitness instructor. Signs were placed on the equipment in the parks to promote the event, notices were placed in local libraries and community centres and details were also forwarded to local groups on the sports database. The details were also posted on the Council's website.

Location Date Numbers attending
Corkagh Park 31st October 3
Griffeen Valley Park 1st November 1
Tymon Park (east of M50) 1st November 4
Tymon Park (west of M50) 1st November 6
Waterstown Park 1st November 3
Hermitage Park 1st November 1
Rathcoole Park 1st November 12
Kingswood Park 2nd November 15
Ballymount Park 2nd November 3
Greenhills Park 2nd November 2

While the attendance appears to be generally very low, feedback from active retirement groups and local residents indicated that the main reason for this was the very cold weather experienced that week. People also indicated that they would be interested in participating in a future event if it was held in the spring.

Consideration will therefore be given to running the event again in 2013, either as a stand alone event or part of another recreation event.

There has been some vandalism where rubber grommets have been removed and one serious incident in Greenhills Park where an item of equipment had to be removed and is undergoing repair at present.
