QUESTION: Councillor E. Tuffy

"To ask the Manager to provide the information requested in Motion 3 at the October Lucan Area Committee meeting in relation to Lucan Sports and Leisure Centre  and Ballyowen Castle Community Centre?"

REPLY:

The Lucan Sports & Leisure Centre was constructed in May 1982 and comprises of a general purpose sports hall and some basic rooms on the ground floor and a gym area upstairs.  There is a Skate Park and Tennis Courts to the rear.The fabric of the building is very dated.  The facility is managed by South County Dublin Leisure Services Ltd.  

The gym area had 12,000 visits last year and there is a preschool/playgroup operating from rooms on the ground floor. The main hall and rooms are well utilised and currently provide accomodation for the following groups;

Lucan Shotokan Karate, Lucan Kickboxing Club, Tae Kwon Do Tigers, Global Kickboxing, Smash Badminton, Esker Allsorts, Esker Ladies, Adamstown Baskerball Club, Lucan Towers Basketball, Brazilian Soccer, Weight Watchers, Park Tennis Leagues, Lucan Adventure Scouts, Natalya School of Ballet, Woodnut Indoor Tennis. There are also 5 local schools that hire the hall during the school term. Lucan Community College, St Joseph's College, Griffeen Valley Educate Together, Colaiste Cois Life, Archishop Ryan N.S.

The Ballyowen Castle Community Centre is a two story building located at the rear of the shopping area. The facility is managed by a voluntary committee supported by council officials. The centre provides for the accomodation needs of a wide range of local community groups. The current tenants include;

Citizen Information, M.A.B.S, Liffey Sound Radio, Lucan Disability Service, Home Start Service, Mother & Toddler Group, Irish Dancing, After School Group, Yoga, Weight Watchers, Bridge Club, Indian Social, Sunday Church Group, plus residents meetings / public meetings etc.
