QUESTION NO. 2

QUESTION: Councillor D. Looney

To ask the Manager to clarify if the Council can take action on blockages in sewage pipes which are on private lands, even if the blockages are caused outside a person's property, and to provide general information and advice to residents on preventing blockages.

REPLY:

The only time that the Council will undertake work on private drains in people's gardens or yards is when these blockages are caused by blockages in the public sewers out on the road. Otherwise householders must unblock their own drains using private Contractors. It would be advisable to get a number of quotes from different Contractors for this type of work. A very good and informative leaflet is available from the Council Offices called "Think Rubbish Bin NOT Toilets" telling people how to prevent blockages in their drains. It is also on SDCC web page at http://environment.southdublin.ie/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=204 where it can be downloaded and printed off.
