QUESTION NO. 27

QUESTION: Councillor E. Tuffy

To ask the Manager if she will explore  the possibility of the Council sourcing the necessary finance to carry out a survey to update the CODANS Report published by the Council some years ago?

REPLY:

The CODAN (County Dublin Areas of Need) report  was produced in 1987. In 1961 the population of County Dublin was 133,000 and by 1986 it had risen to 487,000 - an increase of 266%. Against this background and in order to establish a properly researched and scientific basis for designating areas as Areas of Need, the CODAN reort was commissioned by the old Dublin County Council with a view to ensuring that a greater share of resources were concentrated on those areas which most needed support.

The report, carried out by a consultancy group SUS Research, was the first report of its kind that had been carried out in this country and essentially informed the basis for the RAPID (Revitalising Areas by Planning Investment and Development).

The Council are currently  producing an update to its county profile based on statistical information from the most recent census, and more recent pobal/haas indicies, and other sources.  The resulting work can be made available to the elected members online in the form of an instant atlas.  When available this information will in fact provide the information available under the original CODAN reports.
