MOTION NO. 10

MOTION: Councillor E. Tuffy

"That this Committee has the view that the Lucan Electoral Area is disadvantaged, compared to other Electoral Areas in the County, in the provision for residents of community facilities (it has no Civic Centre, no Council Swimming Pool, only one Sports and Leisure Centre) and requests the Manager to provide a report on Council owned /supported community and sports facilities in the Lucan Electoral Area, and requests the Manager to pursue every possible avenue, including negotians with NAMA, to provide a Community Sports Hall at Adamstown Community College."

Some of the Council owned / supported community and sports facilities in the Lucan area include the following:

* Earlsfort Neighbourhood Centre

* Lucan Sports and Leisure Centre

* Lucan Skate Park

* Hockey pitch Griffeen Valley Park

* Running track Griffeen Valley Park

* South Dublin Football League Ballyowen Park

* 3 Soccer pitches at Griffeen Valley Park

* 4 Soccer pitces at Ballyowen Park

* 1 Soccer pitch at Beechpark

* 2 Soccer pitches at Dodsborough

* 2 Soccer pitches at Hermitage

* 1 Soccer pitch at Hillcrest

* 7 G.A.A. pitches at Griffeen Valley Park

* 1 G.A.A. pitch at Willsbrook

* Lucan Youth Service

* Bush Centre Balgaddy

* Griffeen Youth Centre

* Rosses Court Community Centre

* Tor An Ri Family Centre, Balgaddy

The Council also supports the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Lucan every  year, and more recently was instrumental in establishing the annual Lucan Festival, which is going from strength to strength. 

The following schools offer their room / hall for rent:

* Colaiste Phadraig CBS, Roselawn, Lucan (catering for Music School, Zamba Class and Lucan Hedgehogs)

* Scoil Mhuire N.S. Woodview, Airlie Heights, Lucan (catering for Ballet and Tap Dancing)

* Gael Sion Naomh Padraig, (catering for Centre Stage School)

* Griffeen Valley ETNS, Griffeen Valley, Boulevard, Lucan (catering for Ballet, Irish Dancing, Stage School)

There are only three Sports and Leisure Centres in the  entire county. Lucan Leisure Centre is one of them and Clondalkin Leisure Centre is within short driving distance from Lucan.

There are two Council swimming pools in the county. They are situated in / adjacent to two of the most socio-economically deprived areas in the entire country, as measured by the Trutz Haase Deprivation Index.

The matter of providing a Community Sports Hall is a matter for the Department of Education and the Vocational Educational Committee and will be subject to an appropriate planning application. Council officials from different departments met with officials from the V.E.C. and their consultant architects and engineers,  and offered them information and advice prior to their lodgement of a planning application. The Council will assist in any practical way it can to help bring this proposal to a succcessful conclusion.
