COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE Tuesday, September 25, 2012
MOTION NO. 9
MOTION: Councillor W. Lavelle
"That this Committee, further to my previous motions, requests the Manager to provide a detailed update on the survey of community space requirements in the Lucan area; to report on proposals to address the deficit in indoor community space in Lucan; and to report on the feasibility of providing a community sports hall as part of the proposed Lucan South Community College development."
REPORT:
The Community Services Department undertook to carry out an assessment of the demand for community / activity space requirements in the Lucan area, in tandem with an assessment of available space that might be able to meet some of those needs. These surveys are being carried out by the Community Workers assigned to the area and the results will be brought before this Committee as soon as they have been completed.
The surveys are being carried out in the context of the reported demand for community space by local clubs and organisations. The surveys require a considerable amount of field work to identify possible properties that may be available for use, to see what activities any such property might be suitable for, and to ensure that by moving one club or oranisation that we don't have a negative efect on the facility currently being used by the club or organisation.
As well as looking at the more traditional locations, the team are also looking at units in industrial estates that may be suitable for some of the activities. Previously, such units would not have been considered, but in the current economic climate, there may well be some units that might be suitable for use for some clubs.
The provision of a community sports hall as part of the proposed Lucan South Community College development is a matter for the Department of Education.
