MOTION NO. 9

MOTION: Councillor E. Higgins

That this Council commends all those involved in Play Day and that the Manager provides a report on the event.

REPORT:

National Play Day is an initiative supported by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs. Play has a vital role in the development of our children's lives, and National Play Day is aimed at providing children with an opportunity to play in both a fun and challenging environment. The theme for 2012 is "Experiment with Play."

South Dublin County Council is one of 25 local authorities across the country which hosted events to celebrate and promote play at a local level.

National Play Day was celebrated by South Dublin County Council in conjunction with the County Childcare Committee at Corkagh Park on Saturday 30th June 2012. There was a wide variety of activities for young people to try out on the day, such as face painting, bubble blowing, street games, messy play, a magic show, a pet farm, balloon modelling, a reptile show, den building, bouncy castles, mad scientists experiments, a sand pit, arts and crafts and many more.

While the rain showers which occurred on the day may have stopped some people from attending, those who did brave the elements seemed to really enjoy themselves regardless of the weather.

Entrance on the day was free of charge, and an estimated three thousand people came along to enjoy the activities which started at 11.00a.m. and concluded at 1.00p.m.
