QUESTION NO.9

QUESTION: Councillor J. Lahart

To ask the Manager to present an update on the household tax and the receipts to date in this county?

REPLY:

The Household Charge is an annual charge introduced by the Local Government (Household Charge) Act 2011 which is payable by owners of residential property. It is a matter for owners of residential properties to register and pay the Household Charge on or after the 1st of January 2012.

The Household Charge Bureau, under the aegis of the Local Government Management Agency, processes payments in respect of the Household Charge on behalf of all Local Authorities.

A Homeowner can register and pay the household charge on the website www.householdcharge.ie.  The Household Charge was €100 per residential property for the period 1st January 2012 to the 31st March 2012 after which penalties are incurred. ( see also www.householdcharge.ie )

It is estimated that there are 81,822 residential properties liable for the household charge in South Dublin County Council's administrative area.  The number of household charge registrations that have been processed for payment as at the 28th June 2012 for this Council is 46,142, generating revenue of €4,639,854.
