MOTION NO. 11

MOTION: Councillor C. Jones

"That the Manager will commit to further publicising the Grand Canal Green Route locally especially through the use of signage."

REPORT:

The Grand Canal Way – Green Route Project was carried out in partnership by South Dublin County Council, Dublin City Council, ESB Networks and Waterways Ireland.  This was a dual purpose project in that it facilitated additional power supply from Inchicore to the Grange Castle Business Park ESB Substation and the provision of a high quality pedestrian and cycle route with the latest technology in CCTV and public lighting.  The project was officially opened in June 2010.

Waterways Ireland is charged with the management, maintenance, development and restoration of certain inland navigable waterway systems, including the Grand Canal. Part of its remit requires it to engage in promotion, including marketing and development of the tourism and commercial potential of the inland waterways for which it has responsibility.

Waterways Irelands efforts to promote greater use of the waterways are set out in their document Marketing Strategy 2012-2017 which can be downloaded from their website www.waterwaysireland.org

While there is no specific funding available for promoting the Grand Canal way - Green Route the Council is prepared to discuss with Waterways Ireland how best it can be of assistance to them in promoting this fabulous amenity.
