MOTION NO. 13
MOTION: Councillor G. Kenny
That this Area Committee writes to CPLN on what costs to date have the installation of CCTV cameras cost in the North Clondalkin area. Why since their installation have they not been monitoring or in use to date?.
REPORT:
The overall purpose of the Community based CCTV scheme in Neilstown was to support local communities who wished to install and maintain CCTV security systems in their area with the aim of increasing public safety and reducing the risk of anti-social and criminal activity in places that the general public have routine access to in their areas. CPLN undertook to sponsor the scheme to secure the necessary finance by way of grant aid from a scheme launched by the Department of Justice Equality and Law Reform in 2005 and to proceed with its commissioning and installation.
It is understood that the cameras were recording at all times since installation and access to recordings is available to the Gardai in accordance with the protocol agreed and the approval of the County Council as the Data Controller. There have been protracted negotiations between CPLN , SDCC and the Gardai regarding a monitoring system similar to that in operation at Tallaght Garda Station and this involved a necessary upgrade of the system.
A number of technical issues had also to be overcome and it is anticipated that all necessary works will be completed within the next week or two subject to the contractor securing the necessary approvals from Shared Access.
If the motion is passed the Council will communicate with CPLN to request the information sought.
