MEETING OF RATHFARNHAM AREA COMMITTEE

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

MOTION NO. 2

MOTION: Councillor J. Lahart

"That this Committee calls on the Roads (Water) Department to co-ordinate an investigation into the root cause of flooding in Loreto Abbey apartments with a view to identifying a practicable solution and a source of funding to remedy this ongoing problem."

REPORT:

Numerous meetings have taken place between the residents of the Loreto Abbey apartment complex and the staff of South Dublin County Council concerning the flooding issues at the complex which shows how serious the Council takes this issue. Further to the comprehensive report submitted at the March 2012 Rathfarnham Area Committee Meeting, a subsequent meeting took place on 20th of April 2012 with staff from the Planning Department of SDCC, Councillors and Loreto Abbey Residents, to explain and address any questions arising from the March report. Arising from this meeting it was agreed that a member of the Council's Engineering staff would visit the apartment complex in the event of heavy rainfall and observe what took place. There have been three visits to the site since the above meeting during heavy rainfall events, the most recent of which was on Friday, 8th of June 2012. A report is being compiled at the moment of what was observed on site during these visits. An informal briefing of the Councillors on this report could take place shortly due to lack of area committee meetings during the summer months.

Any remedial works required to resolve the flooding issues in the Loreto Abbey apartments and the cost of same is not a matter for this Local Authority.
