MOTION NO. 8
MOTION: Councillor C. Bond
Could the manager please arrange for the traffic lights at the Old Mill cross roads to be equipped with a noise making mechanism during the green man sequence.
REPORT:
The pedestrian facilities at the Firhouse/Old Bawn junction consists of four independent crossings of the left slip lanes and a further crossing of the ahead and right-turn lanes. In order to minimise delays for pedestrians each of the crossings is capable of operating independently. The use of an audio Green Man signal could result in a situation arising where a pedestrian is standing at the junction of 2 pedestrian crossings one of which is red to pedestrians and one green to pedestrians. This arrangement can be confusing for children who react to the audio signal and may seek to cross against a red signal.
In this situation it is Council policy not to have an audio crossing signal. For those pedestrians who have impaired vision an arrow is provided on the top of each push button. This arrow points in the direction of the crossing it refers to and vibrates during the green man to indicate that traffic has been signalled to stop.
This is a standard arrangement at all such installations and has been agreed with the National Council for the Blind of Ireland.
