QUESTION NO. 10
QUESTION: Councillor W. Lavelle
"To ask the Manager, further to my motion at the March meeting, if an application will be submitted to the NTA this year seeking funding for an extension of the Grand Canal Green Route, including lighting and CCTV, from its current end-point at Griffeen Avenue to the footbridge at Esker Glebe/Cherbury via Griffeen Valley Park; as a ‘Smarter Travel’ initiative which would promote increased pedestrian/cycle activity?"
REPLY:
Proposals for NTA sustainable transport measures grant funding to SDCC in 2012 were submitted to the NTA in late 2011. An application for a further extension of the green route through Griffeen Valley Park was made to the Department of Transport & Tourism by the Parks Department on behalf of SDCC at the end of April in response to a request for proposals from the Department of Transport & Toursim in relation to the National Cycle Network Scoping Study. The purpose of this process is to identify potential routes that in addition to local demand, could also cater for recreational and tourist potential and would have benefits for the local economy. Subject to the outcome of the application to the Department of Transport & Tourism, a further proposal could be considered for submission to the NTA later in 2012.
