MOTION NO. 29

MOTION: Councillor W. Lavelle

"That this Committee requests the Manager to provide an update in response to my motion to the April meeting proposing examination of the feasibility of an extension to the Lucan Sports & Leisure Centre."

REPORT:

The possible addition of an extension to the Lucan Leisure Centre is being considered, along with other proposals, in the context of the recently announced reopening of the Sports Capital Grants Scheme by the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport.  When considering any such proposals, it is a pre-requisite in this financial climate that any such additional facility must be sustainable in every sense - from a financial perspective and also from a need and usage point of view.

Taking everything into account - the cost of constructing any substantial extension to the Leisure Centre, the likelihood of the project attracting some grant aid, the capacity for the extension to add a substantial and continuous revenue stream - it looks very unlikely that this proposal would prove to be a successful and a sustainable venture.
