COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE
Tuesday, May 22, 2012
MOTION NO. 1
MOTION: Councillor G. O'Connell
Cathaoirleach's Business
"That this Committee requests that Palmerston Village be declared a “Poster Free Zone” and that the Council request Political Parties and Independent Candidates to respect the wishes of the residents and desist from postering of any kind during General and Local Elections and Referendums."
REPORT:
At the November Environment SPC meeting a Draft Code of Practice on Election Posters in South Dublin County developed by a subgroup was brought to the meeting for approval. The draft was presented to the December Council meeting - the Report was NOTED with cognisance that a Headed Item on the voluntary election poster policy be listed for consideration by full Council in due course.
In Lucan where this code is already in place, the area agreed with the Lucan Tidy Towns group is between the village name stones. This matter has been discussed at the Clondalkin Area Committee meeting in April and the Tidy Towns committee there have produced a poster free zone around the core of the village.
The designated areas for the Palmerston area may be defined by the following methods
· Name stones boundaries
· Tidy Towns boundaries
· Route of town cleansing
It should be noted that the designation of poster free areas within the specified boundaries is a voluntary code and can only be implemented by agreement of the political candidates.
