SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

MOTION NO. 2
MOTION: Councillor E. Tuffy
"That the Manager provide a report on recent incidences of severe illegal dumping and severe littering in the Lucan Electoral Area and the remedial actions implemented by the Cleansing Unit and the Litter Wardens."
REPORT:
The Litter warden for the Lucan area is aware of the following areas that have recently been subject to increased illegal dumping:
Weston estate: following a locally organised residents clean up at the start of the month, a significant amount of material was then dumped by residents on the public open space in the estate. The Warden has issued notices and fines under the Litter Pollution Act in respect of evidence found at this location and a major clean up involved the removal of several truckloads of waste was carried out by the Council's Operations and Cleansing crews over a couple of days.
Lynch’s Lane: ongoing issues with dumping and burning of waste at this location which is regularly searched for evidence by the Warden and cleaned by the Cleansing Unit. Recent searches by the Warden have resulted in evidence to support a direct prosecution under the Litter Pollution Act. Works are planned by the Roads Department (on a shared cost basis with the Environmental Services and Housing Departments) to restore maliciously damaged public lighting at this location to dull working order to assist the possible detection of further evidence through the use of CCTV.
These and other areas are being monitored by the Litter Warden but residents are encouraged to help protect their local areas from illegal dumping by reporting such activity to the Council via fixyourstreet.ie or using the Council's customer contact system. The Litter warden office can be contacted directly on 01-414 9220 .
