MOTION NO. 23

MOTION: Councillor E. Tuffy

"That this Committee compliments the initiatives undertaken by the Librarian and Library staff to provide training and networking opportunities for persons seeking employment/training and opportunities to set up businesses and asks the Manager to provide an outline report on the initiative and associated events over the last few months and planned for the future."

REPORT:

South Dublin Libraries offer business specific book collections in all branch libraries and online resources for entrepreneurs, businesses and people seeking employment. One very important online business service now available from www.southdublinlibraries.ie is Vision Net a website which provides company information for Ireland and the United Kingdom. Access to this service is available free of charge as consortium costs have been negotiated with other library services to deliver high end services at reduced costs.

Library staff are also finalising business specific web pages which will coordinate start up and business information to facilitate ease of access and use. These pages will be available shortly from the library website which currently receives over 60,000 hits per week.

Lucan library staff are currently liaising with a range of other agencies across Lucan to deliver a business and employment support programme in the library in June 2012. This will include partners such as the Enterprise Board, CPLN, MABS, and the Innovation Enterprise Network.

Planned events will include:

Introduction to Inbound Marketing Thursday 17th May at 10am in Lucan Library. This talk will be facilitated by Jim Nolan, IE Network Manager. Networking opportunities will be available before and after the presentation. This is the first of two talks which will give a basic understanding of inbound marketing and the role it plays in delivering a wide customer base. The second talk in the series will be more detailed and will take place in early June.

It is intended that the IEN will run 2 events per month in Lucan Library– one being a branch network meeting with presentations by branch members. There will also be a monthly topical event with guest speakers. The network is open to all and more details are available from www.ienetwork.ie

Effective Ways for Jobseekers to find Potential Employers and Employment. This seminar will be delivered by Caroline Matthews, career specialist, and will take place in Lucan Library on the 29th May – time to be confirmed.

Beginning in early June a new series entitled ‘Future Options’ will begin which will run for six sessions. The modules will include Skills Exploration; Career Goal Setting; Prioritising Career Goals; Career Action Plans; Interest and psychometric assessments; Self Marketing to employers; Creating Personal Networks; Interview Preparation; Designing a C.V. This programme will be delivered by CPLN with dates to be confirmed.

Starting Out Seminar – Starting your own business. Depending on demand this may be run once every 2 months. Wednesday 20th June in association with South Dublin Enterprise Board. Time to be confirmed.

In late June a workshop entitled Digital Marketing and Social Media will also be presented which will demonstrate how such contemporary tools can increase market share for businesses. Date and time to be confirmed.

Lucan Library will continue to support people seeking work and business information services with free online resources, free internet access, online newspapers, workshops, seminars and exhibitions. Free Wi-Fi is currently being heavily used by job seekers and business people engaged in online research. Similar support for entrepreneurs and businesses will continue to be developed and delivered during 2012. Details can be found on www.southdublinlibraries.ie
