MOTION NO. 5
MOTION: Councillor T. Gilligan
That this Committee applies through the Council to Central Government to allocate funds to install a smooth surface, instead of the mini pebbles in the Playground in Corkagh Park.
REPORT:
The pea pebble surface in the playground in Corkagh Park was installed in the late 1980's when the playground was first opened to the public. Although this type of surface is still considered to be an acceptable impact absorbing surface for playgrounds and meets the required safety standards, it has limitations in terms of restrictions on disabled access, dustiness and a tendency to consolidate over time. To improve access to the play equipment at Corkagh a footpath traversing the playground was installed a number of years ago.
Because of the very large size of the playground at Corkagh, the installation of a fully accessible impact absorbing 'wet pour' rubber-type surface throughout, would require significant Capital funding in the region of €250,000. The Council will however, continue to seek to identify possible sources for this funding, either from Central Government or other possible sources. Consideration will also be given to the possibility of having these works undertaken, on a phased basis over the next 3-5 years, subject to available funding.
