MEETING OF SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

Monday, May 14, 2012

MOTION NO. 7

MOTION: Councillor B. Lawlor

That this council install solar speed indicators near schools throughout SDCC to act as a deterrent to speeding motorists.

REPORT:

The Council is in the process of procuring a set of traffic speed indication enabled signs to advise drivers of their speed along public roads. These are not solar powered but in addition prices are being sought for a solar 'portable' speed indicator sign.

The equipment may be effective in areas where a significant portion of drivers exceed the speed limit. The signs can be setup to report on the change in speed resulting from its activation. The use of the sign is a complementary measure to general traffic calming. Should locations at schools be identified where traffic exceeds the speed limit during school drop off and pickup times deployment of the solar portable option could be considered. A general deployment at all schools in South Dublin County Council prior to an appropriate study of traffic speed could not be justified.
