QUESTION NO.4

QUESTION: Councillor D. Looney

"To ask the Manager to outline the work carried out in Beechfield Park to date, the plans for work over the coming months, and the long-term plans for the park, including the provision of a small playground?"

REPLY:

The Parks and Landscape Services Section, in consultation with the Cherryfield Residents Association, has developed a landscape masterplan for phased improvement works to be undertaken in Beechfield Park, subject to the availabilty of finance to fund the works.

Works commenced in 2011 and to date have included:

In early 2012, the interior and exterior of the pavilion was restored following malicious fire damage in April 2011.  It is proposed that the building will be examined in terms of its potential to be upgraded to facilitate greater use by the Residents Association and local groups as a community facility.

The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport has approved funding for the installation of outdoor adult exercise equipment in Beechfield Park.  The proposed equipment has been ordered and will be installed in the coming weeks in consultation with the Residents Association and the two football clubs who have pitch allocations in the park.

In agreement with the Residents Association, it is also proposed to upgrade one other existing pedestrian entrance to facilitate wheelchair access in the future.

In the longer term, it is proposed that the former basketball area may be upgraded to provide opportunities for children’s play.  There are no proposals at present to provide a formal playground in Beechfield Park.
