COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE (1)
Monday, April 23, 2012
MOTION NO. 7
MOTION: Councillor C. King
That this Committee calls on the Manager to report on illegal dumping in the area since January of this year and to state has there been a marked increase in this activity since the abolition of the Waiver scheme which was being delivered by Greyhound Waste Services.
REPORT:
A leaflet advising on How to Manage Household Waste has been circulated to all households in the County recently.
As with previous amendments to the waiver scheme (e.g. reduction in number of tags provided per year, and reducing black bin lifts to accommodate brown bin lifts) the Council will ensure that all staff involved in the Cleansing and Enforcement areas remain vigilant in assessing any potential impact on the level of illegal dumping in the County and be positioned to take action as required. Additionally, reports of illegal dumping received through the Customer Contact System will be monitored and all Council outdoor staff generally are being requested to report any illegal dumping so that targeted responses can be delivered to specific areas where required.
The level of customer contacts for relevant categories for the year throughout the County to date is shown below:
Customer Contacts | Month | ||||
Category | January | February | March | April* | Total |
Cleansing | 55 | 66 | 106 | 32 | 259 |
Illegal Dumping | 236 | 176 | 137 | 57 | 606 |
Litter Wardens Service | 230 | 195 | 204 | 80 | 709 |
Total | 521 | 437 | 447 | 169 | 1574 |
*figures up to 12th April only. |
The statistics above do not show any increases coinciding with the end of the waivers while staff reports and anecdotal evidence do not show any marked increases as yet. It is anticipated that the vast majority of former waiver recipients are law abiding and will make suitable arrangements to recycle and dispose of their waste appropriately.
