MOTION NO. 5

MOTION: Councillor W. Lavelle, Councillor E. Higgins

That this Committee requests the Manager to engage with each of Lucan and Palmerston Boxing Clubs with a view to examining options for the provision of new facilities for the clubs, in particular ahead of the planned reopening of the Sports Capital Programme and further noting the stated commitment of the Minister of State for Sports to support amateur boxing.

REPORT:

The necessary arrangements will be made for both of these clubs to meet with the Community Workers for the respective areas over the next couple of weeks. The Community Workers will assess each of the clubs concerned to see what needs they may have. They will also need to know how each club is constituted, what governance structure is in place, how many members are attached to each club and will also need to ascertain the financial position of the clubs. 

There are strong indications that a new Sports Capital Programme will be announced in the not too distant future. It is not known at this point in time what the scope or scale of such a Programme might be or what constraints or limitations may be included in its terms and conditions. Whenever such an announcement is made,  SDCC will consider what applications should be made taking the needs of the County as a whole into consideration.
