MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

QUESTION NO. 2

QUESTION: Councillor G. O'Connell

To ask the Manager for an update on the Children’s Play Areas Policy and in particular for an assurance that the promised Play Area for Palmerston is included (of my question of October 2010 ref 25277).

REPLY:

The Play Policy is currently under review and the sub-group set up by the Sports Recreation Community and Parks Srategic Policy Committee as agreed at the November 2011 meeting has met on a number of occasions since. The Review Group will have regard to the experience gained to date, particularly in relation to unsupervised playgrounds. Consideration is also being given to the type and location of play facilities provided for children and also the provision of exercise facilities for adults.

Arising from the review of the Play Policy by the Council, it is envisaged that one of the actions of the new Play Policy will be the review and updating of the existing Playground Construction Programme and which will have regard to the availability of finance at that time.

The provision of a playground in Palmerston is considered to be important and will be considered as part of this review. However, it should be noted that to date, not all of the playgrounds listed in the Playground Construction Programme have been installed and the first priority will be to complete this programme.

The sub-group presented its preliminary report at the Strategic Policy Committee meeting in February 2012, and a final report is due at the next meeting of the SPC.
