MEETING OF CLONDALKIN AREA COMMITTEE

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

MOTION NO. 21

MOTION: Councillor B. Bonner

Cathaoirleach's Business

That this Committee recommends that

(1) SDCC enters into dialogue with the OPW

a.  To encourage the OPW to upgrade the gate post beside Clondalkin Round Tower so that it is built in a matching style to the Tower

b.  To encourage the necessary transfer of land to the OPW for it to complete this work.

(2) SDCC gives an updated report on its plans for the land behind the Tower and the desirability of a walk through from the Round Tower to the Clondalkin Sports and Leisure Centre.

REPORT:

The Council's Conservation Officer has been requested to liaise with and facilitate the OPW regarding the gate post at the Round Tower,

The Round Tower is a national monument and works to it or it's surroundings require specific permission from the OPW.  The Council will, if requested by the OPW, issue a Letter of Comfort to allow the OPW carry out the works subject to the necessary insurances and health and safety documentation being in order.

The Clondalkin Urban Framework Plan, approved by the Elected Members, includes an objective to link the Round Tower site to the ponds nearby and then via a bridge into the gardens of the Clondalkin Sports and Leisure Centre.  However, this land is in private ownership at present.
