QUESTION NO. 8

QUESTION: Councillor B. Bonner

To ask the Manager what is the situation with regard to the under planting around the trees on Orchard Lane, Clondalkin?  Many residents who pass through the village have commented on how dull it was last year with very few flowers as compared to the lovely display in previous years.  Will pedestrians have flowers to look forward to as we exit the civic offices this year?

REPLY:

A number of years ago the flower beds at Orchard Lane and in front of the Civic Offices in Clondalkin were re-planted with perennial flowering plants to reduce ongoing planting and maintenance costs.  Prior to this, the beds were planted with seasonal bedding displays which had to be replaced twice a year, at considerable cost.  As most perennial plants have a dormancy period during the winter months, there is very little in display terms at that time of year but they do generally provide good flowering displays during the main summer months.  It should be noted that the beds at this location are regularly damaged by illegally parked vehicles and by pedestrian traffic which makes it very difficult to successfully maintain planting of any kind, to enhance the environs of Orchard Lane/Civic Offices.

A Tidy Towns Committee has recently been formed in Clondalkin Village following the Tidy Towns Meeting held in Tallaght Stadium on 16th February.  Local Parks & Landscape Services Staff would be happy to meet with representatives of the Tidy Towns Committee on site, to review the options available to improve the presentation of this part of the Village.
