QUESTION NO. 12

QUESTION: Councillor W. Lavelle

To ask the Manager to report on the overall number and percentage of ‘fixyourstreet.ie' reports relating to public lighting which have been submitted in the past 6 months per electoral area; and to further provide details on the average time for repair of faulty/inactive lighting as reported to 'fixyourstreet.ie'?

REPLY:

A total of 432 reports in relation to public lighting were received from 1st August 2011 to 29th February 2012.  This represents 17.8% of the overall number of reports for all categories (2415) received during that period.

In 2011 the public lighting section made 10,000 fault repairs to various components within the 30,000 public lights in its network. The enquiries received from fix your street do not cover the entirety of the Councils public lighting system. In order to carryout public lighting repairs in the most economically favourable manner a systemic and consistent operation based on industry research is utilised*. A competent electrical maintenance contractor is appointed. All public lights in residential areas are patrolled once every two weeks and any repairs are made the following week. Occasionally faults relate to damage to underground cables or the ESB network and a longer repair timeframe will be required.

When a “fix your street” enquiry is received relating to a hazardous situation repairs are carried out urgently e.g. if an electrical panel has become accessible. The public lighting section will be investing in a new asset management system and intend to be able to advise of repair dates for faults.

The average time to repair faulty / inactive lighting is 2 weeks. It is dependent on the type of fault involved and the volume of repairs to be undertaken.

At this point in time Fix Your Street is not configured to provide data on an Electoral Area basis.
