MEETING OF SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL

QUESTION NO. 8
QUESTION: Councillor J. Lahart
To ask the Manager to report on progress made to date on my motion regarding rainwater harvesting in December 2011?
REPLY:
The reply to the previous Motion as discussed at the December Council meeting on this issue clearly stated the cost of the proposal and that there was no funding identified for this purpose and that position has not changed to date.
"MOTION: Councillor J. Lahart, Councillor J. Hannon, Councillor E. Walsh 2009, Councillor T. Gilligan
That the Council considers the merits of pilotting a roof/rain water harvesting project in the county utilising housing from the Social Housing Stock for this purpose
REPORT:
There are rain water containers available on the market for approximately €60 each. These are connected to the downpipe from the gutters. These containers include a connecting kit, which when the container is full will allow the surplus water to drain off into the surface water drain. The average container contains approximately 210 litres.
The total cost of supplying these to the current Social Housing Stock would be in the region of €540,000 excluding labour. There are no provisions in the current budget to facilitate the proposal."
The Council is however looking at possibility of a small pilot and is currently investigating similar projects both nationally and internationally. Any financial cost will have to be identified through savings eleswhere in the budget for Housing maintenance.
