MOTION NO. 5
MOTION: Councillor B. Lawlor
That this Committee calls on the Manager to widen the speed ramp at the intersection of Ballycullen Road and Ballycullen Drive.
REPORT:
The ramp at this location was provided to ensure that traffic slows down when crossing the junction to indicate to drivers that they are entering a generally residential area and to improve safety for vulnerable road users when crossing at this location. There is little point in providing such measures to slow traffic if we then modify them to allow traffic to speed up. The ramp is designed to reduce the speed of vehicles and is working satisfactorily in this regard. Generally traffic from Ballycullen Road approaches this junction at an angle and crosses the ramp with cars traversing the entry and exit sections of the ramp at an angle as opposed to straight on. Any extension of the ramp will not alter the discomfort of drivers at the appoach to the ramp. Obviously traffic crossing the ramp at the junction at higher speed will have greater discomfort. Traffic coming from Ballycullen drive will have already slowed down on the approach to the T junction and should not be unduly affected by the length of the ramp. The council have not received any complaints from drivers or Bus Atha Cliath in respect of this matter and it would appear that the ramp is doing its job. It is not intended that the ramp be altered at this time, however, the situation will be kept under review and necessary modifications in relation to signage and markings will be made.
