QUESTION NO. 2
QUESTION: Councillor E. Tuffy
To ask the Manager for a progress report on the heritage project, utilising the TúS Scheme, being carried out in the Mill Lane area of Palmerston, and if the Manager will make a statement on the matter?
REPLY:
An application for grant funding was made in November 2011 to the Heritage Council under the 2012 County Heritage Plan Programme for assistance to undertake a heritage project in the old church and cemetery on Mill Lane, Palmerston.
A grant of €5,000 has been successfully received from the Heritage Council towards the cost of engaging a suitably qualified conservation architect/archaeologist. As the church and cemetery are recorded as a Protected Structure and a Recorded Monument, the engagement of a consultant is therefore essential in order to undertake an historical and a condition assessment of the site prior to any works or maintenance commencing on site. This will identify any potential remediation or maintenance works that can inform a programme of works by TúS candidates.
It is intended to proceed shortly with the engagement process for such a consultant so that the survey results and any recommended proposed remedial works are available for consideration by the TúS programme.
