"To ask the Manager to confirm the events and resources planned by SDCC Libraries in the area under the remit of this Committee for World Book Day, March 1st 2012?"

REPLY:

A range of events and activities are planned for World Book Day for adults and Children including:

School Groups

10am        County Library Tallaght Maura Byrne, author of the newly published “Bridget in Werewolf Rehab”

12 noon  Lucan Library Maura Byrne, author of the newly published “Bridget in Werewolf Rehab”

11am       County Library Tallaght Streamed from www.worldbookday.com, County Library Tallaght will show the “Biggest Book Show on Earth” – an online festival featuring leading authors and illustrators including Jacqueline Wilson, Eoin Colfer, Julia Donaldson, Derek Landy and much more.

Dickens in Dublin – written and performed by Laurence Foster

Laurence Foster’s one-man-show wonderfully recreates this period in which Dickens casts an amusing eye over our capital city and interweaves his stark descriptions of the Coombe, Mountjoy, the Famine and various Dublin characters he encountered with pertinent sections from such favourites as A Christmas Carol, Hard Times, The Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist.

UNESCO International Day of the Book

We also celebrate the UNESCO International Day of the Book on Shakespeare’s birthday, 23rd April. South Dublin Libraries will hold a bumper book quiz for Book Clubs in the County as well as participating in World Book Night, an annual celebration designed to spread a love of reading and books. Held in Ireland, the UK and the US on April 23, 2012 it will see tens of thousands of people go out into their communities to spread the joy and love of reading by giving out free World Book Night paperbacks. For the second year, South Dublin Libraries will be a “Giver” giving free copies of one of twelve available titles.
