MOTION NO. 3

MOTION: Councillor M. Devine

That the Manager set a schedule of site visits to Tamarisk, Glenview, Fernwood and Raheen  areas - where localised flooding is a frequent occurrence - to survey and discuss with local residents measures that will minimise future flooding.

REPORT:

The Drainage Section has met with some of the residents in the bottom half of Glenview Park Estate near the Tallaght By-Pass and listened to their concerns about drainage problems and what happened during the deluge on the 24th of October 2011 and subsequently. The Drainage Section is investigating the foul sewerage system upstream of Glenview Park in Bancroft Cottages and elsewhere to check for surface water ingress into the foul system and the Roads Section are checking the surface water system's connections to the road gullys.

The Drainage Section is aware that Maplewood Road at the junction  with Fernwood Estate flooded badly on the 24th of October 2011 and was nearly impassible. The cause of this flooding is being investigated by both the Drainage and the Roads Sections at the moment.

The Cookstown Road at the entrance to Raheen Estate opposite the Credit Union and Shopping Centre also flooded and was impassible except for pedestrians on the 24th of October 2011. The Drainage Section put in addition surface water pipes at the entrance to Raheen Estate in 2009 and this seems to have solve the flooding problems here under normal rainfalls. As this road is in a basin/ severe hollow at this location no surface water system will be able to cope with a deluge like in October 2011.

Some of the high even numbered houses in Tamarask Avenue were flooded with sewerage on the 24th of October 2011. It still has not established if this was due to a sewer choke/ blockage  or due to surface water getting into the foul system. These investigation will be persued.

The Drainage Section is more than willing to meet residents of these areas on site as long as the numbers are restricted.
