MOTION NO. 19

MOTION: Councillor B. Bonner

Cathaoirleach's Business

That the Manager presents a report on the operation of the cctv system on the green route canal path.  Does it indicate a significant problem of antisocial behaviour on the green route and if so how is this problem addressed.

REPORT:

Overall there is very little anti-social behaviour on the Canal Route. This is due to the fact people are aware of the presence of the CCTV system and the increased usage of the Route by both pedestrians and cyclists is an acknowledgement by the public of the provision of a safe amenity.

Monitoring of the CCTV system along the Grand Canal Green Route some 7.8 kilometres in length commenced in June 2010.  The standard procedure should some disturbance or anti-social behaviour be noticed is to use the P.A. system to advise the people involved that they are under surveillance and to ask them to leave the towpath. This has had a positive effect in most cases.

If problems persist the Gardaí are called and it is a matter for them to take appropriate action as they see fit.  A good working relationship has been developed with the Gardaí at Clondalkin, Ballyfermot and Kilmainham.
