QUESTION NO. 5

QUESTION: Councillor G. O'Connell

To ask the Management for an update on the provision of a Taxi Rank (or ranks) for the Palmerston Area in the vicinity of Palmerstown Shopping Centre/Kennelsfort Road/Wheatfield Road and for the Village and for a progress report on solving the situation of residents vis a vis Taxi ranks in Lucan Village?

REPLY:

The Palmerston Area is one of a number of areas within the County that are at present being examined for the provision of a designated taxi stand or stands.  At present the area is served by a number of informal arrangements and by some private facilities that have been established within private premises.  As space on the public roads is at a premium in many locations and as resources are limited in the current economic climate, it is necessary to examine all proposals to ensure that value for money is obtained, that there will be an economic payback for the investment to be made and that public facilities are not provided to simply compete with private facilities.  An extensive consultation process with all stakeholders will also be required.  It will also be necessary to present to the Strategic Policy Committee, for subsequent adoption by the full Council, a draft set of bye laws to regulate the operation of any designated taxi stands.

In relation to Lucan Village, extensive stakeholder consultations are ongoing and it is anticipated that based on the current progress that it may be possible to present a report for consideration by the Members at the next meeting of the Area Committee.
