MOTION NO. 10
MOTION: Councillor C. King
That this Committee calls on the Manager when designing my previously discussed and proposed MUGA / local playground in the vicinity of St Dominic's Community Centre at Avonbeg Gardens, takes cognisance of the active age population in the area aswell as the young and designs the facility with both young and old in mind with the provision of light exercise equipment for the active age who participate in the Centre and the wider Community.
REPORT:
The Council's Play Policy is under review and the sub group set up by the Sports Recreation Community and Parks Strategic Policy Committee is scheduled to present a report to the Strategic Policy Committee meeting in March. Part of this process involves reviewing Action 2 of the Policy which is the Five Year Playground Construction Programme 2007 - 2012.
It is intended to review the Five Year Programme, having regard to achievements to date, planned play areas not achieved and representations for additional facilities raised by the Elected members to date. The request for a local playground at St. Dominic's Community Centre will be considered as part of this process.
The Play Policy Review Group met on 18th January 2012 and an update on progress with the existing Playground Construction Programme was provided. It is not intended to commence any new playground projects until such time as the review process has been completed and the current construction programme has been reviewed.
In relation to the provision of a MUGA, the Council sought funding support from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport in September 2011 for the provision of MUGA's at a number of locations around the county. One of the locations, for which funding was sought, was the nearby section of the Dodder Valley Park which is close to this area and which could be utilised by the residents of St Dominics Parish. The Council's applications for funding for MUGA's was not successful.
