COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF CLONDALKIN AREA COMMITTEE
Wednesday, January 18, 2012
MOTION NO. 12
MOTION: Councillor T. Delaney
That this Committee requests a plan of action to 'rescue' the old stone walling throughout Clondalkin Village from overgrown shrubbery and weeds, in order to preserve and enhance them.
REPORT:
The South Dublin County Heritage Plan 2010-2015 recognises the role of old stone walls in conferring local character and heritage value to an area. They are considered as an element of the broad architectural category of heritage features generally described by the term ‘street furniture’. The Heritage Plan lists a number of actions aimed at identifying the full range of these features currently present and seeks to develop a strategy to gain better understanding of the contribution they make to the heritage identity of the County.
Subject to confirmation of budgetary allocations to Heritage Plan projects for 2012, a general inventory of the distribution and type of old stone walls in the Clondalkin locality would serve as a starting point for discussion in the development of any management proposals. As many of these features form the boundary to private land, a programme of awareness-raising for private landowners would form an element of any such management proposals.
