QUESTION NO. 4

QUESTION: Councillor G. O'Connell

To ask the Manager to examine the sequence of the traffic lights at the Oval and that a better effort is made to provide egress from the Oval especially during the peak morning period and to ask if this junction can be monitored from the CCTV at the Kennelsfort junction as there have been a number of near misses reported there in recent times where pedestrians were almost knocked down by cars breaking the (green pedestrian) lights.  Given its proximity to both Stewart's and the Palmerston Primary Schools, is it possible to have flashing yellow lights when the pedestrian lights are on during school times?

REPLY:

Any increase in green time to the exit from the Oval could only be provided at the expense of other road users and would have the knock on effect of encouraging any rat running which may take place. The Gardaí will be asked to monitor the location to enforce the red lights.

The junction can only be partially monitored from the Kennelsfort Road camera due to the footbridge.

The use of flashing amber signals in conjunction with traffic signals is not appropriate.
