Naming of New Link Road between Kingswood and Citywest

REPLY:

It was AGREED following the extensive discussions that took place at the November 2011 meeting of the Area Committee in relation to the above matter that a further report would be made to today's meeting of the Area Committee.

In the course of the discussions at the November 2011 Area Meeting it was confirmed that is was the unanimous view of the Members of the Area Committee that Katherine Tynan should be honoured in the naming proposals for this link road. It was also agreed that the matter would be deferred to this meeting of the Area Committee to enable further consideration to take place as to how compliance with the Official Languages Act and the policies of this Council both as set down in the County Development Plan and generally could be achieved and that a set of proposals which accord with all of the foregoing be developed and presented to the Members of this Area Committee for adoption. It was the view of the Members that nothing in the foregoing should require the use of a translation of a person's name when that person had not been known to the public by that translation of their name.

Members will recall that in the Novemebr 2011 report to this Area Committee reference was made to the history and associations of Katherine Tynan to the area and this is outlined on the attached map where both her ancestral home and the existing Tynan Cross are highlighted, both of which are located adjacent to the existing Tynan Hall housing development. It is considered appropriate therefore to recommend to the Members of the Area Committee that they resolve to confirm the following naming proposals:

• That the section of roadway from M50 Kingswood / Ballymount Interchange westwards to the junction with Cheeverstown Road (R 136) be named Bóthar Katherine Tynan
• That the section of roadway eastwards from M50 Kingswood / Ballymount to the Greenhills Road (R819) / Walkinstown Roundabout which has been partially named be confirmed as Calmount Road - Bóthar Calmount
• That the section of roadway westwards of Cheeverstown Road (R 136) to the junction with Citywest Road (N 82) which has been partially named be confirmed as Citywest Avenue - Ascaill Iarthar na Cathrach, and
• That the section of roadway westwards of Citywest Road ( N82) to the junction with Fortunestown Lane which has been partially named be confirmed as Garter Avenue - Ascaill Gairtéir

If the Members of this Area Committee agree with the foregoing, then a further report will be made to the full Council at their February 2012 Meeting recommending that the Council adopt the recommendations of this report.
