MOTION NO. 20

MOTION: Councillor E. Higgins

That the Manager provides a report indicating any works, events or improvements planned for 2012 in parks throughout the Lucan Electoral Area.

REPORT:

The following improvement works are planned for parks in the Lucan Electoral Area in 2012:

Glenaulin Park – Upgrade Glenaulin Green entrance to park by the provision of railings, vehicle gates and pedestrian gate.

Waterstown Park – Planting of embankment in the vicinity of Stewart's car park entrance.  Continue works on hedgerow management and conservation.  Continue Millrace improvement works.  Installation of new millrace bridge.  Install adult exercise equipment (subject to receipt of clearance from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport to enter into contract).  

Ballyowen Park – Upgrade vehicle and pedestrian entrance from Lucan Newlands Road and provide additional pedestrian entrance at Fonthill Road/Lucan Newlands Road junction.  Provide additional 40 meters of path in park and undertake further pruning and thinning works to park boundary vegetation.

Hermitage ParkInstall adult exercise equipment (subject to receipt of clearance from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport to enter into contract).   

Griffeen Valley ParkMark cycle paths.  Repair/replace basket swing in playground.  Provide kissing gate at Griffeen Glen Park/Elm Green entrance.  Repair flood damage to woodland path.  Install Dog Run. Install adult exercise equipment (subject to receipt of clearance from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport to enter into contract). 

Kew Park open space – Secure boundary to open space along Celbridge Road. 

In addition to the specific projects identified above the Parks and Landscape Services Section will continue to maintain the parks and opens spaces during the year as part of the Arboricultural and Grass Maintenance Programmes.  The parks in the Lucan Electoral Area accommodate 32 playing pitches which cater for 13 soccer clubs and 2 GAA clubs.  The pitches are used on a weekly basis during the respective seasons, catering for up to 128 games each weekend while providing active recreation for over 3,000 people. 

Other events that are likely to occur in the parks include sponsored walks, runs, races and sporting events associated with Lucan Harriers and Weston Hockey Club who are both based in Griffeen Valley Park. The clubs host a range of sporting events throughout the year, the most recent being the Goal Mile event, organised by Lucan Harriers, which took place on Christmas Day.
